Cat Wormer tradewinds

Usually I purchase my worming medication from my vet, but with the economy they way it is I was looking into buying it from an online vet meds website. Particularly I was looking at Tape Worm Tabs Cat by Tradewinds, it stats the ingredients is "Praziquantel" according to wikipedia that is the generic of Droncit/Drontal which is what my vet gives me. Before I buy I was hoping to hear if anyone has any experience with this medication or tips. Thanks!

Hi there, It all depends on the kind of worms your cat has, which medication you should use. If your cat has tapeworm use a product that is specifically for felines with this parasitic infection. Not all wormers cover all worms, and in fact you could be wasting your money by using a product that is not specifically geared toward the partticular parasite, so a visit to the vet with a stool sample would be the wisest thing to do. If your cat has tape worm and you know this for a fact, and this wormer is exactly the same as the medication your vet prescribed, it should be safe. This said, while finances are a constraint, you do not want to harm your kitty, and over the counter wormers are really not the best choice, it is actually more cost-effective and safer to ask your vet for the same product as long as you know you are dealing with tapeworms. I wouldn't want to risk my kitty's health with even more expensive vet visits to try to undo anything that was dangerous or toxic, and not appropriate for a specific condition. The active ingredient in these will kill tapeworms. However, praziquantel will NOT kill any other types of worms. You also need to flea treat the cat/kittens as it's from fleas that *most* tapeworms spread. And you need an accurate - not estimated - weight on each cat so that you properly dose. It's also best given on a full stomach to avoid stomach upsets (and a vomited tablet). If the cats are indoors only, and have fleas, then it's reasonable to suspect tapeworms. If they are allowed outdoors, they need to be wormed by the vet so that all the parasites have been treated.
